CHASING PARTICLES
The 22nd Mainz Science Market 2024 took place on September 7/8 at Gutenbergplatz under the motto “People and Growth”. PRISMA+ was once again involved with a booth, this time on the topic of “Chasing particles - How we identify particles with detectors”. Visitors to the market were able to learn about the standard model of particle physics, different types of detectors and methods for identifying known and new particles with posters, as well as going on an interactive “particle chase” themselves: At the “particle sorter”, physics fans big and small first sifted out particles of certain sizes over several detector stages to take their one “newly discovered particle” home with them at the end. Older market visitors tried their hand at the new app “The Masked Particle” on tablets, designed their own multi-layered detectors over ten levels and solved quizzes about particle physics. Finally, particles from the environment could be observed live in the cloud chamber.
