- To measure the sky : an introduction to observational astronomy
Contents
This lecture will give an initial overview of observational astronomy. Focusing on the various techniques to observe the universe in wavelength ranging from radio to x-rays, we will discuss the operation principle of various telescopes and their limitations. Also discussing the pros and cons of ground based vs. space based telescopes. The lecture will present various telescopes and outline the main progress over the past decades.
Using some observational results we will investigate the life-cycle of stars, the structure of our solar system as well as the evolution of galaxies and various categories of galaxies observed.
This calls for many exciting pictures from the universe!
Finally we will touch on recent topics like the search for exo-planets and the forthcoming discovery of the very first stars with the recently launched James Webb space telescope.
Additional information
We plan an excursion to at least one telecope close by.There are no tutorial sessions scheduled for this lecture.
